Lucifer’s Link

I think the broader populace
Does not well understand,
We public servants often find
Temptation close at hand.
A favor here, a token there,
May riches soon return,
To supplement the meager wage
We work so hard to earn.
And I have fought the best of fights,
I held the lure at bay,
Until temptation ground me down
And I was led astray.

The Least Untruthful Answer

When questioned by the congressman,
I looked him in the eye,
And chose my answer carefully,
For I would never lie.
And if you take the time to parse
Precisely what I said,
Across the line of perjury
My answer did not tread.
I used the least untruthful word
That came into my mind,
Though not exactly in the way
That Webster ‘No’ defined.

The Lifer

While others pause to praise the man
Who’s given sixty years,
We might recall what he has wrought
Before we join the cheers.
An advocate for government,
With bureaucratic heart,
In every regulation passed
Our John has played a part.
The EPA, the FDA,
And now Obamacare!
For every bit of overreach
Our Dingell has been there.
