Biblical Budgeting

To counter Ryan’s budget plan
I combed through Mark and Luke,
I exegeted line and verse
To ready my rebuke.

But universal coverage
Could not my work divine,
Between the calls for charity
And water turned to wine.

I searched for nanny government
And health care as a right,
But Matthew never wrote of them
In ways that I could cite.

St. John was focused on the Word
And never took the time,
To speak of solidarity
On someone else’s dime.

I rather doubt, were they alive,
And part of this debate,
That Matthew, Mark and Luke and John
Would feed the Beast of State.
